Lil Professor writes his first children's book--part 5. Where to even start? We came to Barnes and Noble in Edison, NJ to support two PHENOMENAL authors. Ibi Zoboi interviewed Tami Charles for the book launch of her newest book, Freedom Soup. It was a family affair. Replete with family en masse, delicious soups, and stories of familial heritage and fond memories. What a BLESSING to be there, what a BLESSING to chat with Ibi again, and what a blessing to FINALLY meet Tami. More than a book signing, it felt like a homecoming. To prepare him for the book launch and to talk with the authors, Lil Professor and I watched interviews of both authors online, so he could familiarize himself with their backgrounds, writing processes, and the expanse of their works. Still, at the bookstore, he was GOBSMACKED. Meeting each author for the first time, he was rendered SPEECHLESS. Eyes wide, no words. I think he was struck by the moment of meeting two people who have put their stories to paper and published them. Like he is trying to do. He sat snuggled next to me, taking in the moment, finally working up the nerve to ask Tami the question of which of her characters was her favorite to write. Collected her business cards and kept staring at them even while she was signing his book. :D And when we got home, he asked if we could make Freedom Soup. Together. In the pursuit of his own writing endeavors, it is important to me that he meets and learns from people doing the things he is doing as well. And between you and me, I was GOBSMACKED too. I even teased him and said that maybe the next time we come to Barnes and Noble, we'll come together for OUR own book launch presenting OUR first children's books. TOGETHER. He looked up into my eyes and smiled the widest smile. Following the words that Tami wrote in his copy of her book, "BE BOLD."
